The Future of Community Energy

It’s a really exciting time for community energy. In February this year, the government announced the new Local Power Plan, which will help communities take control of their energy future. Backed by up to £1 billion in funding, the Local Power Plan marks the largest public investment in community energy in British history, and will help local groups and authorities develop clean energy projects, from solar panels on community buildings to larger-scale renewable ventures, ensuring that the benefits stay within the community.

Community owned energy isn’t new in the UK, it just hasn’t had the government backing that’s been available in other countries, like Germany, where citizen-owned renewable energy is the norm.

Keynsham Community Energy welcomes the news, and we’re over the moon that this government finally understands how locally owned energy projects don’t just cut bills, they build community wealth, create jobs, and build a sense of pride and belonging.

Here’s for a bright green future for community owned energy!
